Security guards play a vital role in protecting people, property and assets.

Whether patrolling corporate or public buildings or maintaining safety at a busy event, security guards must be prepared for any situation.

To perform their duties safely and reliably, security guards require a range of essential equipment, from sturdy boots to gloves, torches and restraints.

As they say, fail to prepare, and you prepare to fail!

Read on as we explore the key equipment every security guard should have in their arsenal.

Durable Boots

As a security guard, you'll no doubt spend much of your shift on your feet.

Investing in high-quality, durable boots is crucial for ensuring your comfort and safety throughout your shift.

When selecting boots, consider the following factors:

  • Comfort: Look for boots with cushioned insoles, arch support, and ample room for your toes to move. This will greatly help prevent fatigue and discomfort during long shifts.
  • Durability: Security guard boots should be made from tough, high-quality materials like leather or reinforced synthetic fabrics that can withstand daily wear and tear.
  • Slip-resistance: Choose boots with slip-resistant soles to maintain your footing on a wide variety of surfaces, including wet or oily floors.
  • Ankle support: Boots with sturdy ankle support can help prevent injuries when walking or uneven terrain or responding to physical altercations.
  • Waterproofing: Depending on your work environment, waterproof boots can keep your feet dry and comfortable in wet conditions.

Investing in a quality pair of boots is an investment in your long-term comfort and job performance.

Utility Belt

50mm Duty Belt

A utility belt is an essential piece of equipment for security guards. It allows you to keep your essential tools and devices within easy reach.

A well-organised utility belt stores your items somewhere you can grab them in a hurry, which is vital in emergencies.

When selecting a utility belt, look for the following features:

  • Durability: Choose a belt made from high-quality materials, such as leather or reinforced nylon, to ensure it can withstand daily use and wear.
  • Adjustability: An adjustable belt allows you to achieve a comfortable, secure fit for different body types and sizes.
  • Adequate space: Ensure the belt has enough space and compartments to hold all of your essential equipment, such as a radio, torches, gloves, and restraints.
  • Easy access: The belt should allow quick access to your equipment – that’s half of its purpose.

Protective Gloves

Never be without a good pair of gloves.

Gloves for security guards serve multiple purposes, including keeping your hands warm, protecting hands from potential hazards, enhancing grip, and providing a barrier between skin and unsanitary or dangerous materials.

When choosing protective gloves, consider the following factors:

  • Material: Protective gloves can be made from various materials, such as leather, kevlar, or nitrile, each with its own advantages. Leather gloves offer durability and protection against cuts and abrasions, while Kevlar gloves provide additional cut resistance. Nitrile gloves are ideal for situations involving chemicals or biohazards.
  • Fit: Gloves should fit snugly without restricting movement or dexterity. Ensure you can perform tasks like operating a radio or writing while wearing the gloves.
  • Grip: Look for gloves with textured palms or fingertips to enhance your grip on objects, particularly in wet or slippery conditions.
  • Touchscreen compatibility: If you frequently use devices like smartphones or tablets, consider gloves with conductive fingertips that allow you to operate them without removing them.

High-Powered Torch

A reliable, high-powered torch is an indispensable tool for security guards, particularly those working night shifts or in poorly lit environments. Since security guards often work at night, owning a good-quality torch or two is mandatory.

When selecting a torch for security work, consider the following factors:

  • Brightness: Look for a torch with a high lumens rating, preferably 500 lumens or more, to ensure adequate illumination in various situations.
  • Beam distance: A torch with a long beam distance allows you to identify potential threats or hazards from a safe distance.
  • Battery life: Choose a torch with a long battery life or one that accepts readily available batteries.
  • Durability: It’s best to select a torch with a rugged, impact-resistant construction that can withstand accidental drops or harsh weather conditions.
  • Modes: Some torches offer multiple modes, such as high, low, or strobe, which can be useful in different scenarios. A strobe mode, for example, can disorient a potential attacker or signal for help.

In addition to a primary torch, consider carrying a smaller backup torch in case your main one fails or runs out of power.

Powerful Battery Bank

With all the battery-powered equipment that police & enforcement officers have to carry, having a reliable battery bank is a must.

When choosing a battery bank, consider the following factors:

  • Battery Capacity: Look for a battery bank with a lot of capacity (measured in mAh) that can charge more than one device or give your devices several full charges.
  • Portability: The small and light design makes it easier to carry without making your gear heavier or bulkier.
  • Output Ports: Several USB or device-specific ports let you charge more than one device at the same time, like radios, body cameras, phones, and flashlights.
  • USB Power Delivery (PD): The Universal Power Delivery protocol lets you charge more devices, like laptops and tablets, through the USB-C charging port. It also makes sure that the device gets the right amount of power so that it charges faster and more efficiently.
  • Charging Speed: Fast charging speeds cut down on downtime and make sure your devices are ready when you need them.
  • Water Resistance: Most enforcement officers need a battery bank with an IP rating. IP65 or higher is ideal for use in any weather.
  • Safety Features: To keep your devices safe, look for built-in protections against overheating, overcharging, and short circuits.

Having a reliable battery bank on hand can make the difference between staying connected and losing critical communication & capturing digital evidence during your shift.

Restraints

Flex Cuff Foldable Double Restraint

Security guards may be required to detain or restrain individuals who threaten themselves, others, or property. Restraints must be treated with the utmost care, as improper use of restraints could be deemed a crime

In general, security guards should only handcuff people in the event of a serious crime taking place or having taken place. You’ll also need specific training. Discuss this with your company or supervisor.

The most common types of restraints used by security guards include:

  • Handcuffs: Standard handcuffs are a versatile restraint option suitable for most situations. Look for handcuffs made from durable, corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel.
  • Zip ties: Disposable zip ties can be used as a temporary restraint option, particularly when multiple individuals need to be restrained quickly. However, they should only be used as a last resort and with caution to avoid causing injury.

Security guards should be insured and receive comprehensive training on the appropriate use of restraints and de-escalation techniques.

Always prioritise the safety and well-being of the restrained individual and yourself when applying restraints.
